Amazon Kingfisher, the largest green-backed kingfisher in the Americas showed up in the United States at Zacate Creek in downtown Laredo. I saw and photographed all four US Kingfishers and was watching three species in one view several times during the day. It was very windy which may have kept the kingfishers in the confines of the steep sloped creek more often than the nearby Rio Grande and it's marshy areas.

Our largest US kingfisher at 15-16" long. They are resident in the Rio Grande valley. This is a male. The female has a slate blue breast, then a narrow white band and a rufous belly like the male.

She would hang out over the small pools in the creek mostly hidden from view through a tangle of limbs.

Her crest is quite evident.

Here the very bluish green color of her feathering indicates what her coloration shows.

The Amazon at around 11" long is bigger (twice the bulk) compared to our Green Kingfisher, and is smaller than the Belted. The Amazon is the largest green-backed kingfisher and sports a visible crest.

Note the lighter green color of the underside of the tail. The green back had strong bluish-green tones in some lighting.
